Great big, clean and bright rooms
FamilienO... [TA], , Koege, Denmark

Near the lake. 2 minutes walk from the beach. Three clean pools available.

The rooms by the ocean are the oldest. New rooms are placed by the river.

Beds and pillows are really comfortable.

Breakfast buffet has everything you need.

If you travel with children, I would definitely recommend to stay at this hotel with clean pools, as the waves by the ocean can be quite rough - especially for children, but also for adults.

OK if not spectacular

We rented the four-bed villa for 3 nights. Decent (smallish) bedrooms, but common living room not great - very average furnishing and seating only for 4-5 people despite 4 double bedrooms..

Restaurant is a 5 minute walk onto the beach - easy, even with a pram. Food was very good (OK breakfast buffet, dinner was excellent).

Local beach is beautiful and clean, though big waves for small kids.

Room Tip: Probably go for rooms rather than the villa...

Hidden Gem!!

Many positives and a few negatives to talk about.

We arrived later than expected (almost midnight) and all the staff were asleep by that time; mainly because the check in building seemed like an old house that was turned into a guest house. We booked the 3 bedroom villa with a private pool which looked amazing! BUT because we were late and did't give them any notice, they had given it to another group that had checked in earlier. We weren't too happy about it but they moved us to the newer buildings that had amazing rooms, each with its very own private pool.

The following morning we had breakfast overlooking the beautiful Tangalle beach in an old building which suited the area. Upon speaking to the manager after breakfast, he tried to switch us back to the 3 bedroom villa but couldn't because that group had left the property for the day. He then upgraded us to the newest building for the same rate and gave us a whole floor to ourselves. The private pool there was much bigger and luckily for us non of the other guests were there. A special mention to 'Asanga' who made sure that we had a great time with enough food and drinks to keep us going! Great guy and very hospitable! He even offered to have some milk rice and curry made at his home for us since the hotel wasn't serving that for breakfast.

Overall I would say the place is great and the staff are very accommodating. Its a great place for families, big/small groups and even couples to visit. We will visit again

Room Tip: Villas with private pool are great for couples

Avoid: power cuts, incompetent staff, insects and stray dogs

I stayed here three nights with my wife. We would not stay again. The room itself was ok but when we arrived first there was a colony of ants in the toilet. The room we were given was very far from the lobby and the pathway to reach it was littered, it ran beside a dirty green river and we often met stray dogs or large iguanas.
We asked to have laundry done when we checked in. It took them the full three days to do it despite promising to have it done the same day, and the white clothes might as well not have been washed.
The beach at the front of the hotel was not great (compared to others in tangalle) and the breakfast was very basic, with a lot of flies swarming around the buffet stations. The service overall was very poor. To top matters off, there were power cuts on our second and third nights, and one lasted for 5 hours.
If your aim it to relax and take it easu, our recommendation would be to avoid this badly run hotel.

Lovely view but very basic.

Plus was that the staff were so friendly and helpful. The setting was lovely - we chose a beach bungalow - literally step outside and you're at the beach. The breakfast hut is next to these bungalows as well, so very handy. There is a short walk into town via the canal/lagoon walk-way - safe to walk along but not very picturesque.
Small pool at hotel was fine - very small but fine for a quick dip... this is also accessed by a short walk along the lagoon if you're staying in the beach bungalows.
The bungalow itself was ok... (very basic) the bed was very comfortable and had a mosquito net but the wet room (not a proper shower, just wet room) got very wet and slippery and I didn't have hot water in mine which I had requested on booking. When I got there I had no water at all and they fixed it but said there was no hot water in mine. My family in another beach bungalow did have hot water.

Room Tip: Only beachfront if you choose the beach bungalows. Other villas at main hotel are by the pool and h...

Look somewhere else.

The bad:
- floor covered in a layer of dust. I mean how hard is it to make sure a room that cost over $100 a night is at least clean.
- shower drainage choked so the whole bathroom flooded
- ashtray from the previous occupant not cleared
- WiFi doesn't work
- the lagoon is essentially a squalid drain that flows from the city out to the river full of debris and it smells. If that's what you're idea of a lagoon is then this certainly would not disappoint.
- the pool down our building hasn't been cleaned and I'm not sure if the pumps are on. There's a layer of grime on it and a lot of matted hairballs on the surface.

The good:
- air con works.

In other words, unless you have extremely low standards, look somewhere else.

Loved this place so much... So we just stayed!

We booked a cabana here for 2 days, however when we arrived and seen just how beautiful and luxurious it was, we immediately booked for a further 6 days + a 3 day tour(11 days total) staying in another villa in Pinnawella owned by these guys...that's how great they are. Both Sergei and Nayana are the best people you could hope to meet, and looked after us like we were family. The welcome we received was so warm, and lots of information was given I.e advice on mosquitoes (we barely had any bites here as nets/plug ins are standard in all rooms), booking tours (which we did, book every tour we did, through them. Cleanliness and facilities here are too the highest standard we seen in Sri Lanka, hot shower, WiFi, satellite tv, aircon, safe, bed very comfortable, pools spotless. We were lucky enough to stay in the private cabana on the beach, then private room with balcony, then be upgraded to a 4 bed private villa with its own pool!! We did not want to leave. All staff who work here are the loveliest people, very professional and bend over backwards to make the guests happy. Food also excellent, the breakfast in particular with the option of local and western/continental... Basically anything you want to eat with a view of the beach in paradise, what more could anyone want?! Maybe a massage? The spa facilities is awesome, I had the best massage I've ever had here with a view of the beautiful lagoon, where monkeys jump through the trees on the other side of lagoon. We found the pricing reasonable and worth every penny, we ate and drank in the restaurant every day/night here. Tours we did - Yala, Ella waterfall, Train through mountains, tea factory, gem museum, Sygiria, Tooth temple, royal botanical gardens, elephant orphanage, pinnawella food ceremonies, kandyan dancing....all with a very professional, careful driver in clean, top of the range cars and staying overnight in private villa to the same exceptional standard as Villa Tangalle Lagoon. I cannot recommend this place enough and we will return with friends/family so they also can experience paradise.

Private villa wth pool

We had this for 4 days - was really nice relaxing and quiet having the pool to yourself was really cool - would recommend. You can also go and use the bigger public pools of you want. Breakfast was really nice - staff were excellent as well.

It's beside a lagoon which is really the most scenic of views but you only really walk along this getting to the restaurant and beach.

Think, at least, twice before coming here

The positive reviews for this place must either fake or completed by first time travelers with extremely low expectations of .... everything.
How to find it: Just drive down the main road and look out for a huge pile of trash after passing a stinking and dirty canal., then turn right.
The rooms: are rough concrete bunkers of decent sizes, ours came with a non-working tv, a half-eaten peanut bag and shampoo in a tea-bag sized plastic bag to be shared by two. Yes, they do supply two small bottles of water what they forget to inform you is that they overcharge you for them upon check out.
The "lagoon": is a very interesting definition of this extremely dirty and dead canal that stinks from the city's trash that it carries. This lagoon is indeed central to the hotel; you walk along it on the narrow concrete path to the sad beach, you have breakfast looking at it and you smell it from outdoor plot, should you be fortunate enough to have booked a room with "lagoon view".
The breakfast and restaurant: is very poor and correspondingly overpriced with basically no competitors around. Some shirtless guests flexing their muscles in the queue for the bananas did not improve the impression, nor taste of the cheap juice.
The staff: the local staff were very polite, not so well-trained and intimidated by the owner.
The beach: reaching the beach requires som five minutes walk along the "lagoon". The beach itself is far from uplifting and I saw only a drunk tourist and a local boy going in the water
In short: a very depressing place, on a far from great beach in a dead-end town. We cut our visit short despite having a non-refundable reservation.

Ideal place for holiday

We stayed here for three nights and we really enjoyed the stay. Specially the private pool. Very friendly staff. Can recommend for holiday. Huge place with separate access to beach with a private walkway.
