This hotel has one of the better restaurants in Unawatuna, and the staff are very friendly.
But the smiles and best intentions of the staff cannot overshade the fact that the premises are tired, badly maintained and suffer from limited cleanliness. While it's true that most hotel owners in Sri Lanka operate on a "take the money and run" basis i. e. virtually no investments in maintenance, it's inexcusable given the room rates charged by this hotel.
Furthermore, most rooms have no usable WIFI signal so guests are forced to go to the restaurant for Internet access. For a fraction of the price, one can find far better places to stay in Unawatuna.
A really peaceful setting amongst the trees at the end of the lane in Unawatuna. We stayed in room 11 in the main building overlooking the pool. The room is large and comfortable, with excellent A/C and ceiling fan, big comfortable four poster bed with mozzy net, lovely balcony with furniture, and a nice big bathroom with shower and bath. The water pressure for the shower is a little weak, but other than that the room is really very nice.
The pool are is between the trees, so the sun is not always easy to find, but it is a lovely pool and very relaxing area. The restaurant serves a great breakfast cooked to order, so bacon and eggs is available for those who want a cooked breakfast.
The location is great, just a ten minute walk to the main beach, walking past all the little shops, bars, and restaurants along the way. You can take a tuk tuk if you prefer.
Having read some of the negative reports of this delightful hotel, I was a little concerned but it is clearly worth paying for a decent room in the first place, and if you do that you will be as happy as we were with the room and everything else. Minge bags and Benidorm types beware.
This was booked after much research for hotel accommodation in Unawatuna. The hotel is located at the far end of the beach which is quiter although at weekends at night a close by cafe bar turns into an all night music venue with fireworks ...two choices join in or get ear plugs. The beach front is very private with direct access to the water with sun beds and just set back slightly an eating area where you can enjoy breakfast and lunch. There is evidence of last years demolition of buildings on the beach on the left hand side and a large blue ship freight container on the right hand side. These are a bit unightly but the privacy and lovely beach to the front make up for this. The hotel itself is very clean and the bedrooms maintained to a very high standard by the staff. Their is a lack of hanging storeage space for long term stays. We did ask for more hangers and 4 were provided but with no draws or cupboards a lot of our clothes remained in the cases. The restaurant was very friendly and the food of a good standard. We would have loved to have seen some typical Sri Lanken meals on the menu as the chef was clearly very capable. This is a lovely little hotel probably one of the best in Unawatuna and we enjoyed our stay very much which was for nearly two weeks. One tip the pink tuk tuk outside the hotel, use him every opportunity he is a great guide and will make your holiday with some of the trips to Galle etc.
First things first... This hotel is very run down on the inside. All of the rooms have old doors with the old school keys which is very difficult to unlock the door while sober and nearly impossible while after a few drinks. The beds were comfortable but all you received was a sheet on the bed.. no back up blanket just in case. The bathroom was a fair size but they only gave you one towel per person a day with no bath mat. The bathroom is laid out so there is no shower curtain so water gets everywhere.
While in the rooms you can hear everything downstairs.. phones ringing, dogs barking, people talking, etc. Very hard to sleep in as the restaurant opens at 0730am and staff arrive before then and you can hear everything. Now here is the biggest issue I had... Apparently "overnight guests" or friends are not allowed over into the hotel as per policy. First of all, I never did see this policy and second of all, I have never heard of a hotel not allowing people in! I ended up paying a bit more for a friend who stayed over which is completely fine... but whenever I showed up downstairs they would talk to me about it in front of the whole restaurant which is highly unprofessional. I was absolutely not impressed with some of the staff, made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable.
I would not return to this hotel in the future... maybe eat at the restaurant during the day and that is it. Even families with children.. it is extremely loud! If your kids need a nap in the afternoon that would be very difficult with the noise. Stay away from this hotel!!!!
I must say that I was extremely disappointed with this hotel!
On top of being overpriced for the area, the hotel's website is rather misleading. It states that the hotel is located on the beach (which is true), but it is not possible to sunbathe or even swim in front of the hotel as it is right on the ocean. You need to go next door to sunbathe, and to get a lounge-chair, you need to walk down the beach early in the morning to make sure you get a spot. Not to mention the promised wi-fi in room was relatively non-existant so you're required to go sit in the lobby/dining area to obtain access.
The accommodation itself was old, with rickety old doors that used skeleton-keys and barely closed (and when it was closed, you could still see into the room). A hinge broke off our door because the locks didn't work properly and these were the same doors and keys as the closet that was supposed to be "safe" to lock belongings in. We had no mosquito net in our room (as shown in the picture), and again the pictures of the "standard room" are very misleading! The traffic outside was very loud and we had an amazing view of a parking lot from our room.
On top of all this, they have "policies" which they do not inform guests about until it is convenient for them. For example, overnight guests are not permitted. I didn't read that on the website anywhere or sign any agreement stating this fact.
Unawatuna is an amazing place to visit, with gorgeous beaches, fantastic diving and a great atmosphere. However, I would never stay at Thaproban Beach House again, and I would advise anyone I know to avoid staying here as well. There were many much nicer, more centrally located resorts down the beach that I would recommend.
We had to leave this place early.. the sheets were smelly and the place was dirty. The one thing that made it bearable whilst we were there were the staff; they are fantastic, particularly the head receptionist/office manager, but the management really need to invest in some clean sheets and a some redecoration! It could be lovely but it falls well short of most of the reviews on here.
We stayed here for one night and the room was the nicest we had on our whole trip. Room was very nice and super clean, nice large bed. Bathroom was very nice with a sea view. Only four rooms so nice and quiet. Really nice large balcony to the sea with comfortable chairs. Staff were helpful and nice. Food was very good.
Best Food ever on Unawatuna Beach, cleanest kitchen, lovely presented plates, all of us get served Same time, the Portion was just perfect, amazing, hard to top.
Dont mention the hospitality, go and findout yourself.
Sure i will be back at Kingfisher
Just back from 12 night stay in Sri Lanka. We were keen to visit some beach side restaurants (we were staying in Koggala about 15 minutes away by Tuk Tuk) and read brilliant reviews previously about Kingfisher so decided to try it out for ourselves. The setting was idyllic with candle lit tables set on a small sandy part of beach next to the beach bar, casual laid back place with surprisingly attentive service. Aside from the fantastic setting the food is the star of the show in particular the fresh caught seafood. Brilliant simply cooked food we sampled on 4 occasions. Staff were friendly and the service was excellent. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Will be back next year. Message to Kingfisher, please don't change a thing - you're doing everything right ! Thanks for a great time....
The rooms are quite expensive (we paid around £50 per night as we booked 4 nights, that's around 10,000 rupees per night), but it was beautiful. Amazing shower, very large room, and balcony overlooking the bright blue sea. Wake up, have a swim, relax on a lounger, have a fresh lime juice, tan up. God I wish I was back there!!!
Had some really splendid fresh from the barbecue, with prawns as big as your forearm. Really good to see a lot of local people eating there at the weekend as well - always a good sign. Staff were very attentive, and I would recommend the Arrack (coconut) spirit - but beware the hangover.... They also have a very loud rave next door on a Friday til late, but don't complain about the noise - go and join in!!
