Decent place to stay. Quite close the beach. Food was pretty good. They make it fresh. Service was pretty good. They helped us a lot. We had to leave because of an emergency back home and they were really helpful.
Like many other "joints" in Unawatuna I didn't expect lucky tuna to have decent rooms but I was completely in shock when i saw the rooms... It was quite good!!! However it is NOT a boutique hotel. that is quite a bit of an overstatement. Its just 4 rooms above the bar and restaurant!
IT is however clean. Hot water was available. check in and check out is both at 12.
As a local i'm quite used to not being given the same respect as foreigners when I go down south but I have say lucky tuna you took it to a different level. You completely ignored us. We had to wait for service for quite a while. then when the chips arrived it was cold!!! That was just the start... anyway we didn't stay too long because we went off to see the whales!!! but still don't think i'd come again...
Quite sad really!!!
We stayed at the Kingfisher Hotel for 6 nights in January 2013. This small boutique hotel is right on the beach with a great restaurant and bar. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean and are very well furnised. The location is great - the beach at the front of the hotel is small and rocky as sadly it has been washed away by the tide but it is only a two minute walk to the main stretch of beach in Unawatuna so this didn't effect our stay at all. The staff are a credit to the hotel; they were all helpful and friendly during our stay. The restaurant is the best in Unawatuna. I would definately stay at this hotel again if we were visiting Sri Lanka - we didn't want to leave.
my friend and i found this hotel on tripadvisor and with such great reviews we decided this was the place to stay, upon arrival we were welcomed with a nice cold beer which was much appreciated after a very long and tedius trip from colombo airport but all was forgiven after arrival at this small boutique hotel, shown to our room we had 'welcome' made of tiny flower petals on our bed which must of taken ages to do as the petals were so tiny.....anyway after a quick refreshing shower we headed down to the restaurant on the beach and were made very welcome by the local staff so we sat and sat and sat and relished in our new found home for the next 4 days, the hotel itself is of great quality and the staff so very attentive, our staff in the western world should take a leaf out of these peoples book, anyway over and all our stay was way too short but we will be back mid year, it gets booked out way in advance as there are only four rooms so book early, our minds are still in holiday mode and long to be back there but alas one must come home to save for our return trip, oh and by the way they don't accept credit cards so be cashed up and there is a safe in every room, and by the way the pillows were the best i've ever slept on in my entire life. ps it's hard to remember all of the staffs names but jumpy, casun (or casoon) john and argo are the ones we remembered......and the omelets are absolutely delish. saving madly to go back
We were there 2nd time. Last year November and now in January. Fantastic stuff, friendly and nice. Good restaurant, nice brekfast, nice clean rooms. If you are going to Unawatuna this is one of the best hotel.
Anna from Hungary and Rauli from Finland.
We spent 2 nights in a double room of the main house. They also have nice cabanas and bungalows. You can relax wonderfully in the well-kept huge tropical garden with its palm trees and rich vegetation. Perfect for families with small children. One night they had a delicious barbecue with butterfish, barracuda, chicken, etc. 5 min walk to the beach.
We stayed two nights here at the end of our holiday and it was a lovely place to relax. The hotel is of a high standard with fantastic clean rooms. Great balcony overlooking the sea. The restaurant was very good and we ate here both nights (splashed out on the lobster - could never afford it in the UK!). It gets busy as non-guests come for the seafood so we reserved a table, suggest you do the same if you plan to eat there.
The staff we very friendly and attentive. Great service.
There is a beach bar and chairs/tables just above the water line. There is very little actual beach here, certainly not kid friendly, just not big enough. It is a little rocky so swim rather than wade out. Pleasant for just relaxing on the sun loungers though.
20 min tuk-tuk ride to Galle, which was a great place to visit.
There are no ATM's in Unawatuna, nearest in Galle.
We would stay again.
Thambapanni was a mixed experience. While I loved the serenity of this place, finding it was a pain!! The tuk-tuk rides to & fro cost us dearly.
While the room was spacious & neat, the bed was very rickety!! The bathroom was small but clean.
They don't have telephones inside the room so you have to go all the way down to the reception even if you need water! I personally found this too irritating!!
Though they have a swimming pool, it is not accessible at night & being surrounded by trees means a lot of insects & mosquitoes all over which is a big turn off.
Restaurant was good but on the costly side.
I have listed all pros & cons. Now take your call. Happy travelling.
My wife and I have been visiting Unawatuna regularly for ten years, including January 2013. We have stayed at Shangri-la:Kahuna Club exclusively since we spotted it on our third trip. The tropical garden grounds are spacious, quiet and restful. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The food is always fresh and really delicious, with a chef who's happy to make special dishes to suit all tastes. Mally, the owner, is a jovial, generous and most convivial host, and his staff is young, friendly and efficient. We can't recommend the guest house highly enough. Exceptional price/quality value. I know it looks suspicious to give an "excellent" rating across the board, but we really feel that way. We know all the guest houses in Unawatuna, and there are other fine ones, but Kahuna Club is really home. (Note: there is no fitness center, so I shouldn't have rated it, but I can't delete the dots!)
