Well, I walked down the beach to lucky tuna for lunch, the place was crowded and the serving staff couldn't handle the it. I saw many people returning the food that they received. I wasn't too happy with mine either. i had cuttlefish with rice, it was quite average for a place with such good recommendations. we were a party of 8 and food was either cold when it came to the table or it didn't come at all.
Don't think i'd go again IF i can help it.
We stayed at the Lucky Tuna for a few days back in November, 2011. We really enjoyed our stay. The management was really nice. The rooms are gorgeous and really unique for what you find in the area. We kind of bounced from one hotel to another the first 2 or 3 days and this one was by far the nicest. It was more expensive than others, but the bed was comfortable, the shower was nice and the balcony was awesome. The bar and restaurant downstairs is popular, so it isn't always quiet - but that said I got some excellent naps in no problem.
The only complaint I have is that the water stopped working one afternoon, but he did work hard to fix it and then explained that it was actually a problem with the town and the other hotels next door didn't have water either. This was the case. He was understanding about our frustration and it did getting fixed after a few hours.
The rooms a really nice and clean, the BBQ at night was delicious, The staff is really nice, to have a good drink and have fun the sea yes its one of the best places, as others say water stops at night don't be late for shower, overall at Unawatuna this is the best
Great place!! Delicious food, beautiful grounds and wonderful staff :)
We had a lovely time here, we stayed in the cottage first which was nice, clean and quiet, it had 2 rooms and kitchen facilities which comes in handy when travelling with children. The staff were friendly and great with the kids and Ruwan the chef is the best cook ever!!! Had some super scrumptious meals, best in Sri Lanka :D
The beautiful lush green grounds were perfect for the kids, plenty of room to run around and play.
The owner Mally and manager Lakmali are very approachable and knowledgable we were made to feel very welcome, a home away from home :)
We came back here after travelling east, this time staying in the double rooms, again lovely clean and plenty of room.
I am happy to recommend the kahuna club to both families and couples, it's only a 5 min walk to the beach, tuc tucs waiting just outside if u need to travel anywhere and shopping just outside your door, with a fantastic vibe around the place kahuna club is a must!
Thanks to everyone at kahuna club ur awesome :)
Stayed there for two nights at the start of our SriLanka roundtrip and another three at the end.
The location is excellent, right at the end of Unawatuna Beach. Rooms are clean with large and comfortable beds. Each of the four guest rooms has a nice balcony overlooking the beach. We loved sitting there, just enjoying the breeze and listening to the waves. Their Service staff is attentive and polite and there is free Wifi in the lobby.
Breakfast is not included in their room prices but they serve breakfast in their restaurant (or you can head to one of the many other hotels & restaurants nearby)
Will definitely recommend this place.
We can only recommend Kingfisher! The location is perfect, all 4 rooms with sea view and big balcony. The rooms are nicely furbished and equipped with A/C, Fan, safe, electric kettle, mini bar.
Everything including the bathroom is very clean! Some might miss a door towards the bathroom, but we did not.
Duminda and Christina are very kind and helpful e.g. if you want to have a tour arranged or being picked up. Kingfisher used to have a beach party on Saturdays but it was stopped as some hotel guests wanted to have more silence :-), but the bar (recently renovated) is still open. During the weekends you may find other locations at the beach to party. The restaurant is partly inside and outside under the trees with free WiFi (you see lots of people using it).
The food is extremely good, we never had so many meals at the same location! The breakfast is also very good, sometimes your favorite fresh fruit juice is not yet available - because they buy the fruits every morning - as the people enjoy the juices and cocktails the whole day!
The staff is very nice and helpful and assisting you always. Ask them for a reliable Tuk Tuk driver or about any sightseeing nearby. Beach chairs and beach towels are also available.
A recommander.
Stayed here for 4 nights with 3 of my friends that came down from Dubai. The location is absolutely amazing and the rooms have balconies that face the Sea. Perfect! I would say the rooms are priced a little high, however, they are very nice and have A/C and Satellite TV. If your looking to spend a little extra this is the place to stay otherwise you can stay at cheaper places without these amenities. The one thing that will definitely bring me back to Lucky Tuna is the staff, they were absolutely amazing. Especially Ruan, he is there most days, early morning and if busy late in the evening. He really made our stay exceptional and amazing!
Lucky tuna 'boutique hotel' says the sign hanging out front.
This is not a hotel, but 4 rooms above a bar/restaurant.
Set right on the beach, the rooms are spacious, with a beautiful view & nice bathroom with fancy jet shower.
However, the shower is freezing cold, the towels and bedding are dirty, mismatched and ragged (with mould, stains and holes in), there's nowhere to hang clothes and the balcony chairs are ripped and filthy.
The worst thing is that there is no housekeeping. No one cleans or makes up the rooms, or provides clean towels. There is no reception so if you need anything (like a brush to sweep up the sand you've trodden up from the beach) you have to ask one of the waiters, who are running around busily serving in the restaurant. The room quickly becomes dirty and an attraction for ants.
They are trying to charge $110 and $90 per night for the rooms, and no breakfast. We got them down to $80 but regardless of price, an establishment claiming to be a hotel must provide some level of customer service. They do not. You pay your money and are effectively left to fend for yourselves.
The staff are friendly, but are busy running the restaurant.
The other problem is the noise. The music they play until the last customer leaves, whilst not overly loud, is really bass-heavy and reverberates through the floor, and kept us awake.
Competing music from nearby bars feels like some kind of torture technique as you can hear 3 different songs at the same time from your balcony, driving you slowly insane (although in fairness there was a 10pm 'til dawn party a couple of bars up the beach, so it wasn't all lucky Tuna's fault).
Overall, this place could be fantastic if they had dedicated staff to run the hotel, cleaned the rooms, provided decent linen and bought some new towels.
However, at the moment these are just rooms to rent above a restaurant, and the price should be severely reduced to reflect this.
