We stayed at Kingfisher Hotel for 7 nights and loved it. Having checked out all the other beach front properties, we can say without reservation, that the Kingfisher Hotel is the most beautiful place to stay on the entire beach front. Well worth the additional $.
The rooms are gorgeous. The beds were a great design, very clever and functional. We slept so well with comfortable matress and lovely sheets. The view...oh the view. Overlooking the entire beach, from our room on the top floor it was also very private. It was easy to spend hours sitting on the balcony, just watching the ocean.
All staff were fantastic. The owner Duminda, was friendly and hospitable. And Namal, who looks after the rooms provided exceptional service and we enjoyed his artistic, origami-like bed making each day!
There was two downsides to our stay here. The first was there is no door on the bathroom/toilet. It was nearly a deal breaker for us to stay here.
The second was no wifi in our room. We were on the top floor, so difficult for the wifi signal to reach us through all the concrete. It was a bit of a hassle having to go downstairs to use the wifi. An in-room safe would also be welcomed.
We enjoyed sitting in the chillout zone under a big cabana in front of the beach. Kingfisher also has a great bar and restaurant. Sam the barman makes the best Pina Colada we've ever had.
The restaurant makes excellent breakfast (not included in the room rate) and we had many meals in the hotel as well. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient. The food was always delicious, we highly recommend the restaurant. Between Kingfisher and nearby Hot Rock, you won't find better food in Una.
Couple of other tips during our stay:
We hired a motorbike for 500rp per day, which made getting around really easy. Although tuk-tuks are readily available. Be aware though that it is very dangerous on the road with all the crazy bus drivers, overtaking like maniac's. We nearly had numerous collisions.
If you are interested in surfing lessons, Surf n Lanka in Weligama is recommended. This guy was fantastic - really patient and know's how to teach.
Best exchange rate is Galle, behind the bus station - in a jewellry shop.
If you are looking for a nice hotel on the beach, rooms with high comfort, great service, look no further. Kingfisher has everything you could ask for. We stayed 14 days at Kingfisher in two of the hotel's four rooms. The rooms are tastefully decorated with a balcony overlooking the beach. The staff at the hotel are very helpful and do a fantastic job. Duminda and Christina, who runs the hotel, helped us with everything we needed during our stay.
(Please note that the only bad review Kingfisher received on Tripadvisor is from a person who didn't stay at the hotel)
We had rented the house and the cabana for three weeks and had a fantastic time. It's right on the beach with beautiful waves and water.
it's in a nice and quiet spot a short walk down from busier part of town with restaurants and bars so it's a perfect location with the best of both worlds.
The cleaning is good, the staff is excellent and very nice and helpful.
We liked Hikkaduwa, it's a busier and more noisy city than for example Unawatuna and Mirisa further south. But it's charming in its tuk-tuk runing up and down the street kind of way. People are nice and friendly. We had no problems with sand flies at all as a former reviewer has written, also we didn't feel bothered with traffic noise. Yes you can hear cars and tuk-tuks from one of the bedrooms but nothing that's anoying.
Spent a week at Kingfisher in January.
A governement demolition raid against illegal buildings at the waterfront in December 2011 put a temporary end to Kingfisher restaurant.
When we visited the place end of January, there was still the 4 rooms, the lobby and a beach bar, and small stretch of private beach.
The owner had cleared the beach from rubble but some was still in the water and on either side of Kingfisher rubble was piled up in front of the neighbouring buildings. Next to the lobby, they were building a new kitchen and the owner told us that they were hoping to get the restaurant going again soon.
Kingfisher was really quiet except for occasional noise from the building proces - they tried to keep it down, not starting too early, but still we prefer the sound of waves.
The owner and the staff were friendly, but somewhat disheartened from the loss of the restaurant.
It is a nice place, but without the activity and contacts that we had expected from the previous reviews.
The kids used the kayaks a lot enjoying to surf on the waves in the lagoon.
The rooms were perfect - beautiful decor, good beds , lovely bath room and everything spotlessly clean. The balcony with a view of the bay and some treetops.
We would have liked to have known about the construction site surrounding the hotel and the non-functional restaurant before we came. This might have influenced our choice and would certainly have influenced our expectations.
We recommend that you check in advance the situation of the hotel and restaurant.
We hope the very best for the future of this little place.
To sum up : friendly staff, lovely rooms, quiet atmosphere, good views and good intentions.
Unawatune was our first step on the Sri Lanka beaches. We wanted a quite busy place to spend the new year's week. And it was really busy! a little bit too much even... In a couple of years, there'll be more guest houses and restaurants on the beach than sand! Nothing to do with the paradiasiac pictures on the guides...
To come back to the resort, it is situated on a backroad, 5 min walks from the beach, in a quite garden. So perfect from that point of view. We had a cabana (not a wooden one) with a outside bathroom (amazing). The bed was confortable with a mosquito net! And you'll really need it there! We've never suffer that much from mosquito bites! You could barely go to the toilets without coming back with 10 bites... My calfs still remeber them by now... Without taking into account the sands flies on Unawatuna beach at night. Any repellant can't keep them away!
The staff, all in their bright yellow uniforms, was welcoming and friendly. Their smile beeing a little bit too "commercial" from our point of view.
If you want a good balance of paradisiac beaches and good choice of restaurants, you'd better go to Mirissa.
And if to stay in Unawatuna, I'd rather go to the Secret Garden.
Kingfisher is exactly the kind of hotel we prefere - small, clean and spacious rooms. A big balcony and not at least a wonderfull view.
We stayed for 6 nigths, and enjoyed every minute of our holiday.
The staff and the management was so helpfull and kind - the only thing to be sorry about, was the missing restaurant. We have been told it was a fab. place with great food.
But now we have a cause to come back...hopefully next year
Stayed there for 3 days in March - it was just perfect. Right on the beach. The staff were excellent. The location (short walk along the beach to all the restaurants/bars) was ideal. Overall, it was well worth the money. We took the transfer offered by Mahinda and it proved to be very good value and totally hassle-free.
It was a little difficult to find Kingfisher at Unawatuna and nobody seemed to know of this place surprisingly. We checked in around midnight and staff were very courteous and expecting us. Check in was a breeze and in no time we were inside the cozy, comfortable and elegantly designed room.
All rooms have lovely view of the ocean with large sit outs. All rooms are tastefully done and very clean. Bathrooms were also really clean and neat with a lot of attention put into the details.
Beds were very comfortable and the air conditioning was perfect. We had really good sleep at this property and have nothing to pick on.
Service and staff were very courteous and always eager to help. Even in the middle of the night, there will be someone to attend to if you needed something. This made our stay very special and felt a lot more comfortable. We met owners who also showed keen interest in knowing their guests and understanding their requirements.
Wifi was available in all rooms and was functional and had decent browsing speed.
We could not try their restaurant that was rated the best in Unawatuna as the govt authorities had demolished many restaurants during the week we stayed there. We went with recommendations from Christina and they worked really well for us.
If not for Kingfisher, our stay at Unawatuna would have been a concern and we thank everyone at Kingfisher for making out stay at Unawatuna memorable and a very pleasant one.
From the moment you arrive and are met by Thilak the manager you know you have made the right decision to stay here. Situated right on the beach the waves crashing the Corona ice cold and the nightly seafood barbecue make you realise why you came to Unawatuna in the first place. The rooms are immaculate however the shower may have even confused Einstein for a whole three minutes :)
This is the perfect holiday escape the staff are brilliant it's laid back nothing is too much effort for anybody. If you find yourself at this island paradise don't bother looking further. There may be cheaper places but none better. Love it can't wait to return.
Была в этом отеле в феврале, очень понравилось! Расположение действительно великолепное, рядом с пляжем, но вдалеке от суеты. Что очень понравилось,так это персонал - любую проблему пытались решить всеми силами. Спасибо вам большое!
Shyama you are the best! Thank you very much!!!!=) I hope I ll see again=))
