Comfortable villa in fantastic frontline beach position
brittripp... [TA], , UK

This is a four ensuite bedroom (3 double, 1 single) colonial-style villa with a large dining/living area in the middle. In front sits a swimming pool and beyond that a lawn, a wall and then the beach. It is probably the best villa on this stretch of beach outside Galle. The house comes with a cook (excellent on all nights except the last when he overcooked the fish), three houseboys, a gardener and a night watchman. All the staff were utterly charming and keen to please. Well-trained at presenting gin and tonics on silver trays at drinks time. Truly the Raj experience.
If I was to criticise I would say that the house faces a bit of a maintenance issue. It could be cleaner and some of the shutters are broken and need mending. You could excuse this as dusty colonial chic, but give it a couple of years without serious upkeep and the house could be looking on the tired side. TLC needed! The other criticism is that the beach is a bit grubby - plastic bags etc. but I am afraid that appears to be the norm with Sri Lankan beaches which is presumably why so many people end up in the pristine Maldives.

Wonderful villa with great location and staff

We had a wonderful four night stay in this villa in January with our two teenage sons. It was so relaxing with the attentive staff, excellent food and fabulous location and view over the ocean and the stick fishermen and glorious sunsets. Highly recommend!

PARADISE: found!
yourdarkm... [TA], , Singapore

Our stay at Ambalama Villa was considered one of the highlights of our 9-day Sri Lanka trip (it is on par with our trek up Adam's Peak). My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights in December 2015. We were lucky enough to have the entire villa to ourselves as the remaining rooms were not taken.

The crew comprised Roshan (villa manager & chef), Gayan, Chandra, Dilshan (houseboys) and Jola (watchman) and they were truly the sweetest folks we had come across during the whole trip. The owner Chris is very accommodating and kept in touch with us via email to make sure we settled in well.

Like someone had earlier mentioned, the photographs do not do the villa justice. The villa opens up to an unobstructed view of the beautiful Indian Ocean and it is so therapeutic to just sit there, sipping on ginger beer and watching the magnificent hues of crimson and orange sunset slowly disappear beneath the horizon. The waves are huge and you'd spot a surfer every other hour riding the wave. We spent the afternoons lounging in the hall, playing boardgames. Such timeless moments... If you intend to stay at this villa, be up at about 7 or 8 in the morning and look out to the sea on your left! You'd be pleasantly surprised at what you'll find ;) It's something traditional in Sri Lanka and we were earlier told that it no longer exists so imagine my surprise to wake up to this!!

There is also a nice "water tank" about 10 mins away from the villa and it is a great area for people to swim. There is no difference from being out in the sea except that you're not subjected to the huge waves that most swimmers might find intimidating. Galle Fort is about a 15-min ride away by tuk tuk if you would like to do a bit of shopping or sight-seeing.

Roshan is a masterchef indeed! He prepared a sumptuous BBQ dinner for us on the first night. We feasted on juicy king prawns, fresh fish, calamari and yummy chicken - under the stars, right next to the sea where we could hear waves crashing. Roshan also made delicious black pepper crabs (the paste could rival what we'd find in SG), devilled prawn curry and cashew nut curry (both curries are a MUST-try!) for our other meals.

Finally, just wanted to share an incident that made us feel how the crew had truly gone the extra mile for us. On our last night, we went out to the beach about 10mins away for a swim. We returned at about 6 as it was beginning to turn dark and it was starting to pour heavily. At about 7.30pm, we realised that we had left our safe key at the beach. I got anxious as our passports were in the safe and we were due to depart the next morning. My partner went out to try to find the key and Dilshan promptly volunteered to follow him, bearing in mind that it was very dark outside by that hour (no lights by the beach). They couldn't locate the key and the whole crew was in our room, trying very hard to help us break the safe with some tools. Roshan finally succeeded after much effort, much to our relief! They then smiled and went on to prepare our dinner. No change in their demeanour despite the trouble we had imposed on them. Kudos to these folks!

Look no further, Ambalama Villa is indeed paradise found in Sri Lanka.

Thank you Chris, Roshan and the wonderful crew for our lovely stay at Ambalama. We're counting down to our next stay...

Paradise re-visited

A return visit with my wife a year on but this time accompanied by her mother and aunt. Wow, our fantastic memories from last year didn't fail us. The staff are fantastic, the food amazing, the service impeccable and the location and views.......well, absolutely breathtaking! We were blessed with great weather and had the whole spacious villa to ourselves. We were even treated to a seafood barbeque on the front lawn right next to the roaring Indian Ocean with visiting fireflies...........magical, quite magical. Sri Lanka is a very special place, its sights and people amazing and our stay at Ambalama just made for the perfect visit. We will return, hopefully very, very soon.......

Room Tip: Get a room with an outdoor shower - under the stars - magical!!!

What a wonderful Stay

My family (2 adults and 3 children) stayed at Ambalama for 3 nights at the beginning of October. We simply loved the villa. We had a wonderfully relaxing stay and were superbly looked after by the wonderful staff.

Just as idyllic the second time

After the marvellous experience of last year,I knew what to expect in terms of the amazing proximity of the sea, the sunset views, the sound of the waves as you fall asleep. The food was excelent in 2014 but has gotten even better I think and the chef is game to execute requests and does so with panache and imagination. We had the good fortune to witness turtles clambering up the beach to lay their eggs. What an experience!
The staff were super friendly and remembered us from the first visit, giving an extra glow to the hospitality and service.
I cannot imagine a better place to relax in a sophisticated environment, so close to the sea, but with the luxury of respectful and super friendly service. I hope to return before long!

Honeymoon

We stayed at Ambalama for a week for our honeymoon and had the most incredible time! GORGEOUS villa, very relaxed atmosphere, the friendliest staff and most delicious food! We can wait to go back with friends! Perfect location for exploring too (or just relaxing if thats what you want to do!) and the have a fantastic pack with local recommendations of what to see / do / where to eat etc. Couldn't recommend it highly enough!

The best holiday I have ever had
alice298 [TA], , london

We have just arrived back from a 11 day holiday at Villa Ambalama. I am actually worried about how to do it justice! I have travelled extensively, and with extravagance, and I don't hesitate in saying this was one of the most special times I have ever had. The villa is very thoughtfully planned and incredibly comfortable - wonderful art, amazing warm (warm!) pool, all you can hear is undulating waves. The team were unstinting in their efforts to make it perfect, and the food was always incredible. We saw turtles laying, baby turtles hatching, numerous technicolour sunsets, my4 year old son learned to stand up surf, we went on an elephant...
You won't regret going here, for a minute. We are planning 2016!

Fabulous Relaxed Place!
DengSan [TA], , London, Uk

Entering the Ambalama Villa is a memorable architectural promenade. You pass through the house entrance, and cross a bridge over a pond to enter a light, spacious living room open on three sides with the rumbling waves of the ocean beyond and light-filled courtyards to the sides. The immediate impression is of openness, relaxation and comfort. The villa is tastefully decorated and furnished with high quality pieces. There are four generously appointed bedrooms with lofty ceilings and shuttered doors that open out to a view of the sea through the beautiful coconut palms. The two outer rooms, one of which we were fortunate to have, come replete with outdoor bathrooms and it is wonderful to shower in the tropical warmth.
The staff welcome you warmly and maintain their friendly, helpful demeanour throughout your stay. They remember your preferences and give you the impression that no request is too onerous.
We awoke in the middle of the night on our first night because of jetlag and were hungry. On entering the kitchen to get a bite to eat the night watchman saw us and insisted we sit down at the dining table while he heated up some food and served us. There can't be many places where a night watchman would be so hospitable!
On our second night we were woken by the owner to witness a large Green Turtle nesting on the beach right outside the villa. It was a rare privilege to see this gentle but powerful creature slowly sweeping away the sand to lay its eggs.
Chef Roshan is a versatile cook. He produces delicious hoppers (traditional Sri Lankan breakfast pancakes), quiches and seafood meals with produce sourced freshly each day.
Ambalama Villa is a relaxed abode. It is beautiful but never pretentious, snobby or stuffy. I would not hesitate to return there for another holiday.
