Nice enough property, poor service, bad food
Maya D [TA], ,

The room Cleaners left our balcony door wide open and by the time we got back the room was full of bugs. Food options were limited, very expensive and just not great. Out of the 6 hotels we stayed in in Sri Lanka this was by far the weakest.

Never disapoints

Lunch once more at this wonderful location.
Style in abundance, service as always faultless, food exceptional.
The new additional seating area gives an added dimension of space and and overview of the surrounding area.
Always a pleasure to eat here.

If I could give KK more than a 5 star rating I would!

The hotel is located about a 30 minute tuktuk ride from downtown Galle and the historic fort. It is nestled into the hillside of a quiet village, offering territorial views of the lake below. Travelers could choose to stay in accommodations in Fort Galle, but we found that area to be way too frenetic and noisy for a relaxing vacation. KK is a place to relax.

KK's premises offer guests a relaxing experience of staying within immaculately maintained buildings and gardens. That said, its not sterile, but serene. Even the house dogs add to the ambience of the place - relaxed and occasionally getting up and walking over to guests to be pet.

The hotel offers first rate traditional Sri Lankan and western meals. Most days we opted for the Sri Lankan savory breakfasts and dinners. If a guest is so inclined, with prior arrangements guests can see a cooking demonstration from the chef. We did, and took copious notes for use at home. Western or Sri Lankan, all the meals were top notch. Eating them outdoors overlooking the valley below is part of the experience. The fixed price 3-course dinners are of great quality and value. Wine was reasonably priced, I.e. No price gouging as I often find in popular restaurants.

The rooms are very comfortable, well appointed, and immaculate. Housekeeping does a great job checking the rooms at least twice a day.

Hotel staff are incredibly professional, informative, and friendly. We had several questions during the reservation process, and hotel staff answered those questions and provided advice, including the many options of getting from Colombo and the hotel.

What really struck me was the sincerity of all staff. They are really glad to have guests, and go out of their way to ensure an enjoyable stay. Not stuffy. No ulterior motives. Always engaging. Hotel staff are all great at their jobs, and this extends throughout the entire team: owner, waiters, management, reservations, security staff, housekeeping, etc. service was always offers with a smile and polite questions asking if it was satisfactory and if anything could be changed for improvement. (My answer was always no.) The hotel also will recommend and arrange activities on request: to Fort Galle, a local tea plantation, bike rides, etc. The hotel arranged our day trip to the wild life refuge up north, making all arrangements including transport, take away breakfast, entrance fees, and safari jeep. I would highly recommend doing this during your stay.

Another admirable feature of the hotel is its commitment to the local village. The hotel supports the local transportation drivers, farmers, small businesses, etc. not only does this demonstrate social consciousness, but it also reinforces a visitor's experience of Sri Lanka. There must be a great deal of shared respect because everyone associated with the hotel - everyone - has a warm welcoming smile and demeanor.

Lastly, our stay was for 5 nights. We were concerned is may be too long but I would recommend at least five nights if this were a first trip to Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: They're all unique. They're all detached bungalows and quiet. Check out the hotel web site...

Deplorable experience
abi08923 [TA], , Dubai, United Arab Emirates

We stayed here two nights April 1st till the 3rd. Nice natural setting but it was a major let down in many ways. Extremely limited food options even though the letter signed by the owner claims "wide variety of Thai, Sri Lankan and other cuisine" (have a copy of it). Run more like a boarding house where after 230pm, you have choice of a few basic snacks only and same applies for dinner. Since the place is away from it all, you are kind of stuck. When we complained, we were told this is how the boutique hotels operate, first of a kind we have seen with this arrangement. So if you can survive with very limited food options (2 for main courses) to eat with a set menu for set timings with limited choice for meals, then this is the perfect place for you. The pool was not clean and we did take some pictures with insects etc in it even though a daring lady took the plunge. The worst part was when you take a shower in the afternoon, you can surprise yourself with dirty, muddy water. When I saw the towel after taking the shower, i was shocked to see it all go orange. I went to the management office and was calmly told by I think the owner himself that there was some problem with copper or something similar in the tank and that it was just wrong timing of the day for me to have taken shower. That says it all that the management is aware and it was not a surprise for them but they fail to do anything about it. A casual apology and an acknowledgment is not something you expect from a place that boasts itself on luxury. Second day, the room was full of bugs even though the service team came and promptly did their job.The property is also short on blankets and when we asked for an additional blanket for a family of 5, the last piece given was a rug with holes in it. Thats the most appalling thing I have ever seen. I will separately post the pictures of the pool, the orange towel/ water and the rug with holes in it which was claimed as a blanket. In summary, a pathetic experience, callous service in palace that charges exorbitant money for nothing close to comfortable stay.

Very very good......

Stayed here in March 2015 with friends. Our very first trip to Sri Lanka so we had done our research carefully with KK our first stop in 3 around the south of the island.
It was the lull before Easter which made the hotel very quiet. For 3 days it suited us; any longer and we might have felt too secluded, maybe that's just us.
That said, all of the staff were incredibly attentive, friendly and welcoming.
The accommodation was great. We had the Peacock Suite which was beautifully and tastefully decorated.
Food was fantastic, all very high quality as to be expected. The views from the Lounge and Restaurant are incredible, as were the sounds and sights of the birds in flight. Worth taking Binoculars to the Bar early evening as they return to their island on the lake for safe haven.
All in all the ambience was superb. A wonderful induction to a country steeped with colonial history.
Finally, our funniest moment was seeing Margot, the very young Great Dane and household security, chasing local children down the road with his handler in hot pursuit.

Idealic place with stunning views five star all round

Wow what phenominal view, food is out of this world extacy with wine. We raced to get here in time on the bike for lunch and met with a warm welcome well worth the death defying ride on the back of an Enfield what a fantastic Road to ride from Samakanda, after a long ride the pool is just what you need need.

Just perfect

I have nothing but praise for this beautiful hotel. Tranquil, high quality and superb team that couldn't do enough for you. If you want lively and buzzing this is not the place for you but if you want a well earned rest with peace and quiet this is just the place. We had the tea and garden suites which were located near the pool and restaurant. Beautifully decorated and open air bathrooms, with the addition of a bird nesting in a tree in the shower room, delightful. On top of the great accommodation and pool facilities on this tea plantation with views of koggola lake, the food it divine. Have a cookery lesson whilst you are there and get to know how to make a Sri Lankan currey. 6 wonderful days relaxing with a glass of wine, a good book, hot sun and fabulous service, we will be back next year. Thank you George and the entire KK team from one hotelier to another you have it just right.

Room Tip: Rooms by the pool are better if you have trouble with climbing and stairs

Overall visit
harithj [TA], , Colombo

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at KK ands it was great. We spent two nights but wanted to stay longer.
A place truly to relax. Food was great and service was personalized. It's was relaxing as it was with more mature guests I think the two of us were the young guest who were there. But the treatment given was great. The open airiness and the silence was amazing

Wonderful, just one small negative
TonyRober... [TA], , Cambridge

Kahanda Kanda is the type of spot that calls me to revisit Sri Lanka again and again and
D this property is truly unique.
Nine separate suites set in a virtual jungle location right at the edge of a tea plantation.we had the Peacock Suite and could not fault it. Large and spacious it even had two open to air bathrooms and a simply fabulous view over the gardens.
The staff are first class and very attentive at all times - nothing is too much trouble.
The restaurant is most attractive with expansive views over the valley and Koggala lake. Breakfasts are excellent and we ate "in" on four out of 5 nights and enjoyed every one.
The swimming pool is very good and well located and at 20 metre length is more than enough for most people.
So what is the small "negative"? Perhaps it was because the owner was away, but the bar and restaurant were exceptionally quiet in the evenings - too quiet for some as on two occasions there were just one other couple dining. OK if just spending one or two nights, but not so good for those staying longer.
One can eat out in Unawatuna or Galle, but they are at least 20 minutes away.
Good news is that the owner is opening up another property in nearby Koggala, so one will be able to ring the changes.
Galle is always worth a visit and the KK boutique in the old town is the best destination of all.
We will probably return soon, but if any readers have connections within BA, please lean on them to introduce "direct" flights from London and I do not mean the half-baked attempt that included a stop in Male on both legs of the journey.

Room Tip: Splurge on the pool suite
