In our opinion, THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN UNAWATUNA. And believe us, we went to every hotel on the beachfront. The rooms are spacious and bright, each one leading onto a shared terrace. You'll fall asleep and wake up each day to the gentle sound of the ocean.

The manager, Ameen is extremely helpful, going out of his way on several occasions to help us. The staff are really lovely, always willing to accommodate any needs.

This hotel really made our trip and would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing, welcoming hotel with the best beachfront location imaginable.

A real shame that this place doesn't score higher on TA as it really deserves to be #1!

Also, the location is incorrect on TA, it is actually at the east end of Unawatuna beach, not in Galle.

We stayed at the Flower Garden in November/December 2011 for eleven nights.

Rooms
The rooms are very comfortable. I slept better there than I had for months. We had an air conditioned room with a powerful ceiling fan. We were in a De Luxe Cabana with phone, TV, Fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. We paid $69 USD per night. (Why do they price things in USD in Sri Lanka. Most of the guests are either Brits or Europeans. If they don't want to use their own currency then Euros or Pounds would make more sense.)

Bathrooms
The cabanas have really modern, up to date bathrooms with a good shower. They use solar heating so when it is overcast the water can be a bit cool. In tropical places like this I don't mind because even the cold water is seldom really that cold. This happened to us on two of our eleven days there.

Restaurant
Without any shadow of a doubt the food in the Flower Garden was the best we had in Sri Lanka and possibly some of the best we have had anywhere. The menu is not extensive and it is designed for western tastes but the young chefs are excellent and the presentation is terrific. If you buy a main meal in the restaurant the starter and dessert is included. With prices of main meals starting at under a fiver you can see what good value this is. I had a full fish one night. It was one of the largest I have ever been served as a single helping. It was delicious and it cost me less than £7.

They also do fillet steaks which are top quality and cooked to perfection with a variety of sauces for about the same price. The vegetables are so much tastier than our supermarket stuff and always cooked to perfection. I really cannot speak highly enough of the food in this restaurant.

My favourite was probably the seafood platter. At under £9 this includes a jumbo prawn (more like a small lobster!), a large helping of king prawns, calamari, fish and all the trimmings. It would cost you a fortune here in the UK for the equivalent (if you could ever actually find it).

Internet
They have a WiFi Internet connection in the reception/restaurant area but it is a bit iffy. I am self-employed and I have to use a laptop regularly to keep an eye on enquiries while I am away but on two or three occasions it was just too slow to be usable. It may have been something to do with the storm they had experienced the day before we arrived. It seemd to speed up towards the end of our stay. The reception on the television in the rooms was hopeless. We could not watch it.

Pool Area
They have a lovely little pool that allows you to have a swim or just cool off. They also have a few sunbeds but only four of them are actually in the sun and they are jammed very close together. The garden is lovely but there are so many plants and small trees it is a bit cramped in places. They have sunbeds with plants growing above them and you have to push the branches of a small tree out of the way when exiting the pool at one end. Sri Lankans spend much of their time avoiding the sun and walking around with umbrellas to keep it off them. They do not seem to understand that westerners actually like lying in the sun at times. They should clear an area beside the pool and make some room for sun bathing. Because of all the greenery mosquitoes can be a problem. Make sure you are covered up or using an effective repellent.

Unawatuna is a sleepy little place with a beautiful beach. It has a large selection of restaurants serving mostly western or fusion style food. There are plenty of them around and they are OK but none that we tried even approached the quality in the Flower Garden.

If I was ever back in this area I would not look beyond the Flower Garden. I just wish I could eat there every week.

This place is pretty much perfect. The villas are stunning and spotlessly clean, large and airy with beautiful furnishings great attention to detail. The bathrooms are beautifully designed. The pool is huge and the beach totally unspoilt and pretty much left to you and a few fishermen. We (4) had the middle villa for 6 days and absolutely loved it. Samantha cooked utterly fantastic food as part of the very reasonably priced self-catering package. The staff as a whole were outstanding and could not have been more helpful yet discrete too. Open Wifi was provided so that you can ensure your absent friends envy! You are striking distance from Galle Fort which is definitely worth a visit and there are plenty of turtle hatcheries and backwater boat trips to do too. We were lucky and watched a turtle lay her eggs just 200M from the Villa one night. Magical. The Airport is about 3 hrs North. I think that filling all three apartments with family and friends would make this a perfect holiday location from which to really enjoy Sri Lanka. I cannot rate this place highly enough.

Sri Villas is a nice property on the west coast of Sri Lanka, and an entirely acceptable place to spend a bit of time lazing away the day on the beach or in the pool. I have given it an "average" rating primarily because it does not quite deliver on the 5 star promise of the website or the photos.

The positives:

1) The location is stunning. Right on nice beach - you can believe the pictures
2) The pool is good size, with great area for little kids to enjoy
3) Large rooms, comfortable, decent decor
4) Staff is very nice/accomodating, and food is generally good standard
5) If expectations set right, you can definitely enjoy some time here

The "could do betters":

1) The three villas really are too close together for privacy if other parties renting those villas. If you are in the middle property, expect people to be right in your space if using the kids section of the pool (they will be right on your terrace). To get breeze, you definitely need to keep doors open, so again - limited privacy
2) Flies, flies, flies - annoying during the day, but for some reason - disappear at night....
3) Rooms 4 star standard or below - good for Sri Lanka (much better than backpacker joints), but don't expect 5 star by any means
4) Nice design, but could use spiffing up...

With all of that said - a great place if you rented the entire property with a big group, and realistically only a few 5 star properties in Sri Lanka in any case. If you can afford it, Fortress, Amanwella much nicer as beach properties, and Galle Fort Hotel/Amangalle great historical spots in Galle Fort.

Come with the right attitute (and maybe don't be as spoiled as I apparently am) and you can definitely enjoy this place.

So - all in all - good, not great

We (family with 2 children 12 and 14 years old) had in October 2011 a wonderful holiday in the Flower Garden in Unawatuna. We had known Unawatunas from a stay one year ago and liked it so much that we came back. The difference was that this time we stayed in the Flower Garden, what made our stay more pleasant. We had a wonderful, large cabana with a enormous bathroom, a whirlepool, a working aircondition, a large terrasse and lots of space.
The swimming pool is really large and absolutly clean. It is surrunded by a berautiful garden. The beakfast was the best we ever had in Sri Lanka: fresh queezed juce, a huge fruitplatter, toast, eggs. For Dinner you get european food of very high standard. In Switzerland we would have to drive far to get such sensationell beef with red wine sauce or Madagascar. Seafood is very nice too. If you like you can get good curries as well. Sassi, the friendly owner oft he hotel, speeks perfekt German and English. He cares for everybody and trys to to fulfil all wishes. The boys from the service are very polite and helpful. Their English is good. All of our wishes were fullfilled: an earlier beakfast, different side dishes for Dinner, ice cream and baked bananas separately etc.
We met very nice people from England and Italy in the Flower Garden. Two oft them had their birthdays during our stay. Each time the team of the Flower Garden made a big effort decorating the table. We had two really great evenings.
What I wanted to mention is, one day it started to rain. Somebody from the hotel took the laundry whirligig with our towels under the roof. These are the many small differences which make the Flower Garden so special.
Sassi organized the return journey to the airport for us. This, as everything, worked out perfectly.
Dear Sassi, Thank you for the wonderful time! Staying in your hotel was so nice, that in the meantime I have already booked our next stay.

we stayed for 6 nights at The Flower Garden, and had the most wonderful time. We had a deluxe room which baked onto the jungle, so we were able to watch live shows each afternoon whilst sipping our G&T's. The food is fantastic, the staff are so friendly, and Sassi the owner is always ready to greet you, ensuring you are having a good time.

Don't let the narrow lane to the hotel put you off. When we first arrived, I wondered what I had booked, but it opens up into a little oasis. this is not a 4 star hotel, this is an honest, homely and friendly guesthouse, which is worth every penny. We would definitely come here again. Not just for the hotel but for the wonderful people of Sri Lanka.

The Sun n Sea resort was suggested to us by a friend from Sri Lanka who indicated that she used to stay there when she went to Unawatuna. So we followed her advice and it was well worth it..

A tip before you get there. From the airport, which is outside of Colombo by about an hour, there are 2 routes that you can take to get to Unawatuna. The traditional Sri Lankan A2 highway or the new E01 toll road. While the former is a gruelling 5 hour drive, the latter will get you to Unawatuna in about 2 to 2.5 hours. The toll is 400 LKR and its worth every penny.

The room is most basic; a bed with a mosquito net hanging from the roof, a set of dresser draws and a towel rack. No TV, so if that’s important for you, give this place a miss. There’s free WiFi and the speed is quite good. There’s running hot water which is sourced from the solar panels on the roof and the rooms are complete with air conditioning machines as well. No fans for those who can’t sleep without them.

If you are a vegetarian you’re going to feel a pinch around breakfast (provided toast and fruit alone is not enough for you). In which case try the South Ceylon Vegetarian Restaurant which is a 15 minute walk from the resort when you walk along the beach. The vegetarian options otherwise are also a little limited, but that’s also if you only intend on eating at the resort and not anywhere along the other beach front restaurants. The minestrone soup is nevertheless delicious and not to be missed by soup lovers. The portions of food are also quite large and could be shared quite easily by two people if you don’t have a massive appetite.

The best thing about the resort is the staff. It’s almost as if God created the most charming and helpful people on earth and put them all in the resort. There is no point of the day when they aren’t willing to do something for you and they bring new life to the phrase, “service with a smile”. We were originally slated to stay 2 days, but the place and the staff seemed too good to leave at 2, so we stayed an extra day (thankfully a room was available) which they also were happy to accommodate.

this place is truly well made, well thought out, good value for money and Sassi, the owner - good guy, is always improving the place.

the staff are always very friendly and helpful, the place is quiet, but within easy walking distance of the beach, the food is good and the pool is a good size, warm enough and perfectly clean.

the rooms are fantastic. we are staying in one of the top rooms and it is close to Hilton standard - not quite there, but half the price and with much more character.

I am pretty hard to please, but both my girlfriend and myself kept extending our stay.

top drawer...

We (7 friends and family) stayed a the Flower Garden for 5 nights over xmas and had a great holiday. And it seems only fair to give some of the credit for this to the Hotel. Big ticks of approval go to the style and size of the rooms, the pool room, the friendly service, the swimming pool and location.

Some points for improvement/things to look out for were the repeated failures to secure hot water in the rooms (I recommend determined persistence should this happen to you). Many mosquitoes, likely attracted by the many water features and breakfast that remains unchanged day after day (but it was very tasty for the 1st three days).

Stayed two times in this hotel with my wife (January 2011 / Cabana and January 2012 / Super Delux Room). Everything was perfect: spacious and clean rooms, rich breakfast, friendly and helpful stuff, fantastic sea food for dinner. 10 minutes on foot to the beach.
