A quiet and relaxing hotel, very well maintained, surrounded by greenery.
We stayed in a cabana which was spacious with a comfortable bed and a large bathroom with modern facilities. The room was always kept clean which is not really common in Sri Lanka.
There is a nice clean pool which is a great gain if you stay there out of season when the sea is rough. Anyway the beach is not far (5 – 10 minutes walk). The main road is also nearby.
The food was great, both breakfast and dinner.
The staff were helpful and friendly and the service was really good. Sassi, the owner, is committed to his guests' satisfaction.
One problem: the mosquitoes. Because of the dank grounds around, there were lots of mosquitoes in the evenings / nights, and we couldn't sit outside and enjoy the small garden in front of our cabana.
My partner and I have stayed twice before, and the warm welcome and friendly, homely, feel is such a pleasure.
Both times we have stayed in a cabana, in a four-poster bed, with a modern, quality bathroom.
The location, a few hundred yards from the beach, is great if you want to have a relaxing place to stay rather than the hustle-bustle of beachside accommodation. Being one of the only - if not the only - place with a pool gives you somewhere to swim in cool, still water, if you want a change from the sea.
The breakfasts are wonderful - plenty of fresh fruit, and lovely Sri Lankan omelettes.
I never go without having a massage or two. Very reasonably-priced, a leisurely massage at the end of the day, retiring to the cabana to let the oils soak in, leave you feeling relaxed and soft-skinned. A great way to end a day in the sun, before heading out for an evening meal.
Sassi is very communicative and easy to deal with from afar, and I have nothing but good to say about the whole setup at the Flower Garden.
We arrived at the Flower Garden a day early and the owner, Sassi, couldn't have been more accommodating. We were given an idyllic cabana with our own garden and terrace, very private and relaxing. The room conditions are better than anything I've seen in Sri Lanka. Immaculate, beautiful antique furnishings, mosquito nets, mini-bar, lovely modern bathroom. The cabanas have real character.
Breakfast (which is included in the price) was great. Fruit, choice of eggs, toast and juice. All very well cooked. The restaurant was good too. I had a calamari which was second to none! On the last day we had the Sri Lankan breakfast which was great and should be experienced. The egg hoppers are excellent!
The staff at the Flower Garden are also great. There is a real professionalism about the place that makes you feel like you're in a resort hotel, but without the trappings. The staff or owner are not pushy, just want to make you feel comfortable and ensure you're having a good time.
The facilities/services are also good - massage is recommended as is the Tuk Tuk driver outside (sorry, don't know his name) who took us on a great trip to the lagoon and turtle hatchery.
I booked this hotel in the knowledge that it was Unawatuna's no.1 hotel on TripAdvisor and I wasn't disappointed. Highly highly recommended. It made our holiday!
I have NOT booked this hotel due to the laziness of the reservation staff.
I sent a very courtesy email inquiring about their availability with my tentative dates and Christina replied saying they did have availability. I then replied with my confirmed dates and also asking for an airport pick-up. She sent a very rude email back to me stating "As for your first inquiry, I do have a room available from the 2nd to the 4th November 11. After the 4th November all our rooms are fully booked." Surely something along the lines of "Oh no, I'm so sorry we can't accommodate you this time, but please do think of us next time you come!" would be more polite?! She also did not make any mention to my query regarding the airport transfers.
Regardless - I then replied and asked to make a booking for the first night and also the airport transfer and have not heard anything back at all!!! I have since made a booking with another hotel who replied to my emails.
Clearly this woman has no idea bout customer service.
Really special place. Lovely pool, bar area, and restaurant. Breakfast was standard fare - eggs and fruit - but fresh. Beach is a 5-10 min walk, not far at all and quite pleasant. Very relaxing hotel. We did have an issue with the first room - aircon wasnt that strong - but they moved rooms for us very easily so it was fine. We met the owner, nice guy. Overall, a great place
We stayed at the Flower Garden Hotel for 7 nites, Oct '10. The room was clean & comfortable, but the verandha was excellent for relaxing amongst the landscape, drinking a Lion beer & watching the tropical rain pour down. The pool area was great & morning breakfast consistently good. Less than a 10min walk to the beach but well away from the noise. The staff even showed me how to prepare an authentic Sri Lankan meal from scratch, no charge mind you.
Halfway through our stay, Sassi offered a nite at his newly developed property on the edge of Yala National Park. The package included his own A/C van as transport & allowed us to stop anywhere we wanted to along the way, Yala Park safari & a nite in a luxurious bungalow with an incredible curry dinner.
Sassi is an awesome host & has trained his staff to western 5* standards. The first place to consider staying at in Unawatuna.
Set back in the jungle, up a track, 15 minutes walk from the coast road, these 2 villas are in their own small grounds, surrounded by trees. Except for the birds, cows, thunder and a distant disco beat on a Friday, the villa is very peaceful.
Pleasantly decorated, with comfortable beds and AC and ceiling fans, lovely bathrooms and really good internet, large balconies with chairs and kitchen, big TV and DVD player. Really helpful manager who will make arrangements and generally help you find your feet. Away from the busy noisy coast road and if you get one of the upper floors you get a nice breeze
Furniture is a bit basic, uncomfortable sofa (use your pillows for additional bum-fort), no dinning table (but beds ARE good), the kitchen is very basic with a fridge-freezer and some gas rings, not a lot of pots and pans etc, one sink and a small problem with ants, so you have to keep it clean. Its a bit like camp cooking, no cable TV. Its a bit away from the beach/restaurants.
We were the only people there during November but there are 4 other flats very close, so depending on the other guests you could have a brilliant community vibe or neighbours from hell.
We spent 2 glorious weeks at the Ambalama villa in September 2011. The location of the villa was directly on the coast and the grounds and pool for the villa were kept immaculate. The holiday was completely stress free and the staff at the villa looked after us particularily well. Roshan the chef was a excellent cook and we enjoyed joining him to do the daily food shop. All the food was freshly cooked and we dined like kings for the duration of our stay. Tai arranged our pick up from the airport(air con vehicle) completely hassle free and he arranged for a masseur to come to the villa, a fabulous indulgence and he also helped organise some day trips to see elephants(Magnificent) and the tean plantation. We felt that we were thoroughly spoilt and that the team looked out for us. For anyone who leads a busy life and is looking for complete relaxation and pampering I would highly recommend it. You can choose to do as little or as much as you like but quite honestly we really didn't want to leave the villa for too long and when ever we returned from a trip we felt like we were coming home. A fantastic find
I chose this place after reading many reviews in Trip Advisor, and wasn’t disappointed at all with my choice, as I was travelling with my wife on our Honeymoon.
I had booked a Deluxe cabana for my wife and I and was amazed to see how well maintained the cabana was. I had mentioned to Sassi, the owner earlier that I was travelling for my Honeymoon, and he made it even more special by decorating the bed with flowers. The room has a four-poster bed, TV & DVD player, extremely clean and 'posh' bathroom and fridge amongst others. The surroundings were also very clean and full of greenery. The cleaning staff was on call whenever we wanted them and did a great job too. The place is also close to the beach (around 5-10min walk), and the distance made it nice to go for a stroll after a heavy lunch or dinner.
The hotel has a very beautiful and clean swimming pool, one of the biggest in the area. They also have an Ayurvedic massage centre, which is good.
Staff and Reception:
The staff provided the best service we could find. They were very courteous, and helped us with deciding which places to visit during our stay there. They are very well groomed by Sassi.
This, according to me, was the BEST place to have food in Unawatuna. The Butter Fish in Lemon sauce and the Sea Food Platter were the absolutely delicious and I haven’t eaten better sea food anywhere else. The breakfast options were American (fruits, toasted bread, eggs and sausages) or Sri Lankan (String Hoppers or Hoppers with lots of curries), both accompanied by a Fruit Juice.
The airport pick-up and drop were done on time and with no issues. Only problem is that this place is around 4.5-5hrs travel (one way) from the airport, which takes away a big part of your day. However, there is a highway which will open shortly, which should cut down the time to 1.5hrs or so.
Overall, this was one of the best places to stay and Sassi and his staff made us feel extremely comfortable and at home. Will surely come back one day. Thanks to all.
We stayed at Kingfisher Hotel for 7 nights and loved it. Having checked out all the other beach front properties, we can say without reservation, that the Kingfisher Hotel is the most beautiful place to stay on the entire beach front. Well worth the additional $.
The rooms are gorgeous. The beds were a great design, very clever and functional. We slept so well with comfortable matress and lovely sheets. The view...oh the view. Overlooking the entire beach, from our room on the top floor it was also very private. It was easy to spend hours sitting on the balcony, just watching the ocean.
All staff were fantastic. The owner Duminda, was friendly and hospitable. And Namal, who looks after the rooms provided exceptional service and we enjoyed his artistic, origami-like bed making each day!
There was two downsides to our stay here. The first was there is no door on the bathroom/toilet. It was nearly a deal breaker for us to stay here.
The second was no wifi in our room. We were on the top floor, so difficult for the wifi signal to reach us through all the concrete. It was a bit of a hassle having to go downstairs to use the wifi. An in-room safe would also be welcomed.
We enjoyed sitting in the chillout zone under a big cabana in front of the beach. Kingfisher also has a great bar and restaurant. Sam the barman makes the best Pina Colada we've ever had.
The restaurant makes excellent breakfast (not included in the room rate) and we had many meals in the hotel as well. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient. The food was always delicious, we highly recommend the restaurant. Between Kingfisher and nearby Hot Rock, you won't find better food in Una.
Couple of other tips during our stay:
We hired a motorbike for 500rp per day, which made getting around really easy. Although tuk-tuks are readily available. Be aware though that it is very dangerous on the road with all the crazy bus drivers, overtaking like maniac's. We nearly had numerous collisions.
If you are interested in surfing lessons, Surf n Lanka in Weligama is recommended. This guy was fantastic - really patient and know's how to teach.
Best exchange rate is Galle, behind the bus station - in a jewellry shop.
Flower Graden Hotel is well run and very friendly, we were staying in a Luxury Cabana and the room was well maintained and comfortable with a good AC system. Breakfast is really good both western and Sri Lankan versions. The staff are amazing very helpful andf friendly. food in the evening is average with lots of attempts at western food, much better to head out into una watuna and go to one of the beachfront restaurants for a curry. My only complaint is there was no hot water, apparently it was solar powered and we didn't have the best weather but other guests seem to have hot water. in summary great little place for the money.
