Location: bang on the beach, in the middle of the action
Hotel: resort with multiple buildings, two swimming pools, beach bar & beach beds
Room: big with king bed, balcony, big bathroom
Negatives: bathroom had a damp smell
Ranking at time of writing: #16 out of 27 hotels in Unawatuna
The hotel is located on the beach in middle of all the action in Unawatuna and even though it doesn’t fall on Welle Dewalaya Road (which has most of the restaurants, spas, bars and disco) one can cut across rather easily. The hotel has a restaurant and a bar onsite which face the sea. One can lie down on the beach beds and order drinks from the bar. They have 2 swimming pools, again one on the beach which has a glass wall and the other within the resort which has a Jacuzzi.
Our room was reasonably sized and had a wardrobe, a table/chair and a double bed. The bathroom too was big but I wonder why certain hotels don’t use glass walls/shower curtains to cordon off the bathing area. Calamander does neither, hence the whole bathroom gets wet after a bath and probably that’s the reason why our bathroom had an uncomfortably damp smell.
We had a balcony but that overlooked the garden and the reception, so can’t really rave about the view. On that note, I’d highlight that the rooms in the annex building had better views – those of the pool and the beach.
The breakfast was a nice spread of Lankan dishes and the regular cereals, eggs etc. Their lunch buffet was slightly pricey for the spread, we skipped dinners.
The hotel is centrally located and offers beach access while at the same time allowing one to visit other restaurants and bars lining the beach. However, don't expect ultra luxury as the hotel is a bit dated but that is reflected in their price viz-a-viz the other hotels in Unawatuna.
