Best fish I've ever tasted
Kthomas20... [TA], , London, United Kingdom

When we arrived here all the outdoor tables were full, but we were happy to wait with a cocktail by the bar. I ordered the tuna steak based on previous reviews and I can honestly say it was amongst the best fish I've ever tasted. It was also served with rice and a fresh salad; very welcome on day seven of our holiday and constantly eating out. My boyfriend had the Arrack prawns which were very good and plenty in portion. We had the brownie for dessert but it wasn't like you'd get at home - more like a chocolate cake. Overall the main course food was fantastic, the setting very pleasant with just the right level of music, and the service was great.

Great location, lovely room

The location is perfect - at the end of Unawatuna beach with all the restaurants etc within a short walking distance.
The room is cool and beautiful. There is no door to the bathroom, I have no idea why! The balcony is big and nice, A/C, nice bathroom, comfortable bed. There was no hot water during the 2 nights we spent there.
Try to get a room at the top floor - these have more privacy from the guests at the restaurant and the people working there. They also have a better view.

The only problem with the Kingfisher Hotel is really not their fault: It was extremely noisy. The One Love bar or something sent up fireworks about every half hour at night! There is loud music from the other places along the beach and some noise from the road behind the hotel. Even though I sleep with ear plugs, I was woken up several times. There is a loudspeaker at the Buddhist temple at the end of the beach which sends 2 hours of mass in the morning and at night.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the top.

Great little hotel
MGB1986 [TA], , Adelaide, Australia

Spent two nights here during our trip around Sri Lanka.

Staff are very friendly and always polite. Rooms are very clean and quite spacious. Good balcony to sit and relax.

Food at the hotel was excellent especially breakfast. Spicy soup with prawns and vegetables also very nice - much like Tom Yum.

Wifi not available in the rooms, but we did get a weak connection at times.

Beach location very nice.

Many thanks for a very enjoyable stay.

Perfect stay and awesome food

Perfect stay and awesome food.
Beautiful location and rooms with a great view. The restaurant serves great food and drinks. The best that we had in Unawatuna. Would love to go back.
The staff was extremely friendly.

Perfect in every way

I don't have one negative comment to make about the Kingfisher... The rooms are huge and beautiful, the view from the large balcony is amazing, the food is delicious (the best I tasted in Unawatuna) the staff are very friendly and can't do enough to make your stay as good as possible. I originally booked to stay for 4 night and in the end I stayed for 10... I didn't want to leave.

I cannot recommend the Kingfisher enough. Go and try it for yourself. You won't want to leave! :)

Room Tip: There are only 4 rooms and they're all identical... I stayed in room 1, which was on the top flo...

Good Food

Although we didnt stay we stopped in for dinner and the food was delicious. Mix of thai and sri lankan dishes which were delicious. Slightly overpriced compared to other local places but not much. Would recommend.

Lovely hotel

We stayed 3 nights here and loved it! It is small hotel with lovely rooms that are very clean and well equipped. The hotel is quite expensive compared to others but it is worth it.
It is right on the beach and has loungers etc and the restaurant is very nice serving lovely food every time.
It is in a great location at the end of the beach so not in the middle of the tourist busy part but a few mins walk to get there.
The only negative point I have is that they seem to run out of things quite a lot eg no bananas one day, certain types of juice etc but it is only a tiny minor.
If we were to visit again we would not hesitate to book this hotel as we didn't see anywhere else that matched it. It was probably the best hotel we stayed in whilst in Sri Lanka

Awesome Place

The rooms are 5 Star quality, extremely well maintained. The beach is great and the food is amazing. The staff is very attentive and strive to meet any need you might have. I was here in the off season and managed to get a room. If you're visiting in the high season, book way in advance because there is only 4 rooms. All rooms have nice balconies with a good view of the beach.

The only knock I have, is the wifi. A little wiring or even some wifi extenders will solve the problem.

Wonderful stay

We spent a week at the Kingfisher to chill out after a two week tour of Sri Lanka. We loved the hotel - the room was spacious with a large balcony, the food was wonderful and the management and staff could not do enough for us. We could have gone out to eat as there are several restaurants nearby but the food and ambience at the Kingfisher was so good we dined there every night - candlelit tables on the beach, a good selection on the menu (probably the best food we had eaten during our three week stay). Yes Unawatuna beach is busy but the Kingfisher is situated at the quieter end and we never experienced any noise or disturbance. To reach it you turn off the main road and follow a winding street which reminded us of streets on Greek islands, lots of shops and small restaurants - the Kingfisher is almost at the end. We would thoroughly recommend it.

Great rooms, not as great service
SeaSpirit... [TA], , Denver, Colorado

Part of my review, I suppose, is biased by the beach - Una is not a gorgeous beach. As other people have commented, a lot of the sand is eaten away or just completely encroached upon by shacks and restuarants and other eyesores. It's still attractive, just not pristine paradise. The Kingfisher is lovely and modern in terms of décor, furnishings, size, etc. (though too modern in the open door bathroom). We booked semi-last minute and supposedly got the last room left - I was informed we'd have to switch rooms midway through when I booked, an inconvenience, but fine. The manager, when it was time to switch, brusquely approached us, told us when we had to be out, told us when we could move into the new room (there were several hours we were without a room) and didn't even attempt politeness or apologies for the hassle. When our flight was delayed and we missed a connection, I tried to call the hotel but, even though it was before midnight, no one answered. I'd agree that the rooms and maintenance are lovely but I found the service less customer-friendly.

A four room guest house that has a fantastic restaurant and beach bar.
It is situated at the west end of the bay which has the most sand to relax on.
The rooms are new, solid and equipped with a TV, fridge, fan, air con, power shower and large sea facing balcony.
Possibly the best place to stay in Unawatuna.
Highly recommended!
